When kids take private music lessons once a week, they have to wait to check their results from the practices until the next lesson. If kids are in a band at school, the class will meet on Monday through Friday. It means if they practice today, they will get the results tomorrow. If they don’t practice, they will find out the consequences the next day more clearly than they practiced.
For example, a band student couldn’t make all the notes in a scale correctly in his class today. He probably became upset, because he heard that some of the students played correctly. He went back home, practiced again and again until he could play the scale confidently. The next day, he may be anxious to go to the band room to play his masterful scale. Some students still cannot play correctly and some do. Can you imagine how he feels after the hard practice he did the night before?
Smart parents check kids’ practice every day. If you cannot be at home when they practice, make conversation about the band class, their instruments or new terms learned during the class that day.
If you don’t know the music terms, go online and take this free course to learn the basics:
Look at your children’s music from time to time and check the titles of their music. They play very simple versions of famous tunes. Amazingly, in a couple of months after the band class started, kids will have the ability to play your favorite tune. Sing with it, dance with it expressing your joy, kids will be encouraged to continue improving.
One more tip, have them practice in front of a bathroom mirror. Just do it and both of you will experience the magic!
Do you have any good practice experiences or secrets to share?
